Up to 90% of the population will suffer from reversible gum inflammation (gingivitis) in their lifetime. However between 10-15% of the population will have a more severe form of gum disease (periodontitis), where there is destruction of supporting bone and structures. Periodontal disease is caused by the bacteria present in the build up of dental plaque. Where gingivitis is reversible with good oral hygiene, in periodontitis teeth can be lost without treatment and long-term maintenance.
