Dental Hygiene

Regular visits to a Hygienist are very helpful at maintaining healthy gums and preventing Periodontal disease.

Up to 90% of the population will suffer from reversible gum inflammation (gingivitis) in their lifetime. However between 10-15% of the population will have a more severe form of gum disease (periodontitis), where there is destruction of supporting bone and structures. Periodontal disease is caused by the bacteria present in the build up of dental plaque. Where gingivitis is reversible with good oral hygiene, in periodontitis teeth can be lost without treatment and long-term maintenance.

Prevention is the best cure.

We can detect early signs of gum disease and may offer you preventative and/or non-surgical treatment to help maintain healthy gums. We may also:

  • Prescribe high strength fluoride toothpaste to be used twice a day.
  • Refer you to a hygienist for directed treatment.
  • Assess how you brush to ensure you are being effective.
  • Advice use of specialised interdental brushes and/or use of a mouthwash.
  • Assess your diet and how often you snack, particularly on foods that contain sugar.
  • Provide professional gum treatment where necessary.
  • Remove teeth that are severely affected.
